The presumption that circulate in the community show males have a shorter age than women. Researchers now know the cause, one of which is the role of maternal genes.
The new study found no difference in the mitochondria, which is part of the cell that produce energy. Mitochondria have their own DNA separate from the DNA inside the cell nucleus.
In almost all species, mitochondrial DNA passed from mother to child without the intervention of the father. These conditions are not directly make women live longer due to the influence of the mitochondria in which there are cells that produce energy.
Even so if there is a mutation in mitochondrial DNA then this will impact on the man because he had no other choice, while the woman he was no selection between mitochondria within him, and inherited from his mother. The results of this study are reported in the journal Current Biology.
"The burden of these mutations are not detrimental to women, but can shorten the life span for men," said Damian Dowling, of Monash University in Australia, as quoted by Live Science, Friday (08/03/2012).
Dowling said the age difference between men and women not only come from the genes. But the number of mutations in the genomes of these will work together to shorten the life span of men.
While there is also speculation that other causes that make women live longer than men, for example, men generally take greater risks, as well as the influence of testosterone.
Other factors also influence the age of men is shorter than women is due to the pattern of his life as more smoking, alcohol consumption and other unhealthy lifestyle.
